A white-hat hacker imagines the worst

Though professionally he’s a white hat, he tends to wear an actual black bowler hat in public appearances, (some kind of meta-joke, perhaps?), like when he appeared on stage in June at the Money 20/20 conference in Amsterdam. The presentation he gave to a crowd of maybe 500 people was, quite simply, terrifying.

You may not know his name or face, but Ralph Echemendia has a lot to do with that. As well as providing security training to the likes of NASA, Google and Microsoft, Echemendia has provided technical consultation for films and TV series where hacking is integral to the plot, like Mr Robot and Snowden.

Technology is completely changing the geo political game. It is like a video game now, One where the players get rewarded almost instantaneously. The press and media are the reward, it’s like Pokemon Go. You look for where the most Pokemon are and catch em all. It’s what modern day politics has become. We should do everything in our power to preserve and protect the freedom of open and unfiltered communications worldwide. This is not a nation-specific issue, this is a global one. A net neutral world is essential to our collective evolution.

Miami Hacker Ralph Echemendia Now a Security Consultant for Snowden Movie


The stakes were high this year when Ralph Echemendia began work on the set of Oliver Stone’s latest film, Snowden. The Miamian’s job was to fight off daily attacks from malicious hackers. Born in Cuba, Echemendia was raised in Miami in a neighborhood near the airport.

His first computer was a Commodore 64, which he and a friend used to master the art of “war dialing.” That technique, in which the computer dials random numbers to find a modem, eventually led him to a bulletin board system where he first saw a copy of the “Hacker Manifesto,” a 1986 essay that served as an unofficial guide for budding hackers.

In a town where everyone has been pwned, or soon will be, there’s no such thing as false paranoia. Which brings us to Oliver Stone and his upcoming Snowden biopic.
